Teeth Whitening

Bleaching is a way to lighten teeth - quickly, inexpensively - without bonding plastic or porcelain material to the teeth, or removing any sound tooth structure.  In this respect, it's one of the most conservative cosmetic procedures we have, much safer than some of the abrasive toothpastes on the market.

Bleaching is best for people with otherwise healthy teeth - (we're cautious when it comes to teeth with enamel loss, lots of cosmetic bonding, or large amalgam restorations).  Some patients experience heightened sensitivity during treatment, especially if pulp chambers within the tooth are especially large and close to the enamel surface.  We prefer to begin with the cleanest possible area, so we may recommend a cleaning beforehand.

The success of the procedure depends in part on what caused tooth staining in the first place.  Surface coffee, tea, and tobacco stains that resist cleaning can be bleached away.  Antibiotic staining - from tetracycline, for example - is a bit harder to treat with simple bleaching. For this reason, we'll take a full medical and dental history at a consultation appointment. The idea is to be very selective about which tooth is a good candidate for the procedure.

Treatment itself lasts 60 to 90 minutes and, depending upon your situation. The results are impressive.

Please call with any questions you may have and we'll be happy to go into more detail.
